Update~

Still not much to updated: the river crested, the world didn't end, we haven't floated away.

Thursday, Josh went and sandbagged in a neighborhood in way North Fargo from early afternoon til 10 p.m. He made some new friends (and actually remembered their names ;) ) and says that the people that they sandbagged for were friendly and super grateful. By the time he got home, his arms felt like jelly and he was pretty sore.

Friday, Bert's was going to close down early so Josh called the dealership to see if they needed any help or people to work, since a lot of people can't make it into town to work with the road closures. No one at the dealership answered the phone, so he called his service manager and was told that they were closed until further notice and that Luther was sending a company from the Cities here to build a dike around the building. That was around noon. He came home from work, thinking about going sandbagging again even though he can barely stand up straight, but decided by the time he got anywhere, they'd be done since they were shutting down at 6:00. At 5 or so, he got a phone call from his service writer at the dealership saying that they WILL be open on Monday after all.

Rumors started circulating early Friday afternoon that West Fargo Public schools would be closed all of the upcoming week so that the buildings can be used as emergency shelters. Great. I decide to make the executive decision that we will still have preschool unless something happens and the Sheyenne River ends up being a problem or there is flooding within West Fargo. That decision wasn't too complicated ~ it's kind of silly to cancel school if West Fargo isn't flooding, they're not using the church as shelter, and the Sheyenne isn't flooding. My real dilemma came when it came to deciding what to do about our field trips. I knew there was no way we could take the trip to the dental office, it's located on University Drive and a lot closer to water than I'm comfortable taking the kids when the river is like this. Tuesday's field trip was supposed to be to Coldstone Creamery, which is closer to West Fargo but by the time I factor in the fact that the bus service I use is located in Moorhead, chances were we wouldn't be able to get there anyways. Makes me sad because I know the kids will be disappointed, but at least we'll have something to look forward to on the April calendar!

Today, I am at home, making lunch/dinner/whatever it ends up to be for Josh and some friends that went to sandbag at someone's house. I was supposed to work at the store this morning until 3:30, but since the mall shut down, there's no fabric shopping for the Fargo-Moorhead area today! Chances are, we'll be closed tomorrow. We shall see....

I need to make the phone calls to the remaining families about school next week and then I am on a mission to get the baby's room cleaned out some more so it is ready to paint.

Hope everyone is staying dry and safe!

Flood

There really isn't much to update as far as flood goes for Josh and I. No water in the diversion (that we can see from our deck, anyways), so our biggest concern for our house right now would just be the sewer backing up.

Fingers crossed that all the dikes hold and it's not as bad as expected and that everyone stays dry!

Snow days

Being a teacher has it's advantages ~ summer break, snow days, etc.

Yesterday was our second snow day (today, our third) this winter. Really, the best part of yesterday's snow, besides getting to sleep in...after a 7am trip to the grocery store... was that the dealership shut down early and so Josh came home for most of the day! We didn't do anything really. He stained the new coffee table and I made brownies, later in the day we played some Xbox. It was nice, nonetheless. Later in the day, Josh shovelled some. As you can see from below we had quite the snow drift!

Today is a boring snow day since it's just me that's home. I was secretly hoping that Josh wouldn't be able to get out of the driveway or the neighborhood til later so that I'd have him home to hang out with again. No such luck. I've done some odds and ends stuff, but it's too quiet to even want to do anything for an extended period of time. I have been entertained all afternoon by the baby wiggling around. There must be gymnastics lessons or something today that I didn't know about....

Rough week ~ school Monday, home Tuesday and Wednesday, school Thursday morning, and home Friday.

Friday Discussions

For some reason, Fridays have become a little bit more educational for me. For the last month, it never fails ~ my afternoon class is getting lined up and ready to leave for the day and somehow we end up having a pretty deep conversation for 4 and 5 year olds.

The first week, we are nearly ready to go, it is 3:00 and one of the girls looks at me and says, "Why don't you like *gender* babies?" I was pretty confused and had to ask where she got that idea. She said, "Well....if you liked *gender* babies, why wouldn't you decide to have one of those?" This leads to a discussion about how I didn't have a preference of what sort of baby Josh and I had, that we just wanted a baby, and that you don't get to decide what sort of baby you have. After I thought that we'd sorted things out after explaining that God is the one that decides whether it's a girl or a boy baby, I get asked why we didn't just have two babies at the same time because then we'd have one of each. By now it is after 3:00 and I'm pretty sure the parents are wondering why we haven't dismissed for the day, but I explained as best as I could that, just like the gender of the baby, you don't get to pick how many you have at a time (usually). We get that all sorted out and can dismiss for the weekend.

I was crazy to believe that that'd be the only discussion like that that we'd be having in that class. The following Friday (why Fridays, anyways!?!?) we were getting on our gear to go outside and dismiss. One of the boys zips his coat up as far as it goes and then sort of sniffs at it and mentions that it smells like cigarettes. All of the kids, except one, make a face, knowing exactly what he's talking about. The one that didn't make a face asks what a cigarette is. The other kids start to explain to him what it is. Once he's sort of got a grasp on what it is, one of the girls mentions that her mom and dad both smoke and that when her mom has tried to quit but can't do it and how she knows that it's bad for you. We talk about why it's hard to quit, and what it does to your lungs and heart. The boy that didn't know what cigarettes were asks some questions, digests what he's just learned and then says, "Why would a person do something like that if they know that it's bad and can make them sick?" My thoughts exactly.

Last Friday, (thankfully before dismissal) our discussion wasn't quite as deep....or as detailed. One of the kids asked me if I decided that I didn't like the baby, if I could just "put it back where it came from." I laughed. I didn't try to, but I did. And tried to sort of explain, without really explaining that that's not possible. The same kid, after I've said that that's not how things work says he'd go back to where he came from but he's not quite sure where that is. All I can do is tell him to ask his parents. And try to keep a straight face.

80 Days...

Today was my glucose test. The "glucola" (clever name, huh) didn't taste nearly as bad as I imagined it would. Now I just have to wait and hope they don't call me tomorrow. Waiting to have blood drawn was the longest part of my appointment ~ once we'd determined the baby's heart rate was 148 or something, and was head down and measured my belly, I got to go sit and wait for the needle. I forgot to tell them they probably needed to use a smaller needle and I am pretty sure the tech just ran down to the cafeteria and got a drinking straw and stabbed it into my skin ;)

Apparently we're getting closer to this whole having a baby thing, I was sent home with hospital registration forms so that when the time comes, we can just show up. I wasn't expecting homework for at least another month!

This weekend, we are installing ceramic tile in the kitchen and dining room. (I say "we", but really I mean Josh, Mike and Brandy ~ my job is to supervise and look cute.) From Thursday until Sunday sometime, there will be no cooking on a stove. Good thing I have a crockpot! I'm excited for the tile to be done, then all that's left is to eventually rip up the rest of the carpet and put in laminate flooring and then we're done with projects for awhile. I hope. Painting the baby's room doesn't count.
